I’m divided with this. On one hand, having the Feds into everything only means the small farmer will eventually be pushed out. On the other hand, Rod Plecus is sitting on a huge opportunity, but he has to move into “marketing” his product. He has a very clean new plant and could move into branding one of the best organic meats around. There is a massive market out there for him. Also, the training of provincial inspectors will vary but may be no worse and possibly better. The Union just wants to put it down as it affects them and their Union dues coming in. Sure there will be those that don’t follow guidelines: this is where people must get involved with their food and follow it closer, instead of “relying” on governments and everyone else to save you…
RE April Reeves. You say it is a bad thing having the feds in everything and small farmers will eventually be pushed out. Look at what the fed gov’t right now getting rid of the Wheat board. This will hurt small farmers. Reason being is farmers have to sell grain to someone and the only ones who will buy it are the big company’s they wil tell farmers ok this is what we will pay you take it or leave it and they will have no choice. Just like Beef farmers in Alberta your animals go to to either Cargill or lakeside for slaughter they offer you this amount of $ you either take it or not. No other place to sell your cows to for market. Those 2 plants make up the 90%-95% beef products sold in BC, AB,Sk,MB.
