Candidate Commitments:
The following candidates have made the commitment to food safety.
British Columbia | Alberta | Saskatchewan | Manitoba | Ontario | Quebec |
New Brunswick | Nova Scotia | Newfoundland & Labrador | Prince Edward Island |
Yukon | Northwest Territories | Nunavut
| Province | Riding | Political Party | First Name | Last Name | Comments |
| Alberta | Athabasca -FM | Liberal | John | Webb | I agree |
| Alberta | Calgary Centre-North | Green Party | Eric | Donovan | |
| Alberta | Calgary Centre | Liberal | Heesung | Kim | This is a perfect example where the less government/more free enterprise Conservative dogma fails. Food inspection is a government responsibility and leaving it up to industry is an abdication of responsibility. I agree with all of the points, including hiring additional inspectors but I can’t say if 1,000 is the right number. |
| Alberta | Calgary Centre-North | Green Party | Eric | Donovan | |
| Alberta | Calgary Centre North | NDP | John | Chan | I am pleased to make the Food Safety Commitment. I agree with all your points. We must have enough inspectors to ensure the safety of our food products. And if we need 1000 more inspectors to do that, then we must have 1000 more.
As a New Democrat I have had many concerns with our last governments’ commitment to the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America on continental integration. This partnership will bring us down to the lowest common denominatior on many policy issues including food safety. As New Democrats, we are committed to stop the privatization of food inspection and will work to stop any program that jeopardizes the safety of our food. |
| Alberta | Calgary Northeast | NDP | Vinay | Dey | Increae funding, More inspector to hire.No self regulation rather government inspector to check. |
| Alberta | Calgary Southwest | Liberal | Marlene | LaMontagne | I, and our Liberal Party are strong advocates of food safety. The duty of a government is to protect the security and safety of its citizens. The Harper government abdicated their responsibility by cutting food inspection budgets and creating more paper work for inspectors. What is the most reprehensible on the part of the Harper government is maintaining higher standards of inspection for foods being exported than for the people of Canada. Marlene LaMontagne, Liberal Candidate, Calgary Southwest |
| Alberta | Calgary Southeast | NDP | Chris | Willot | |
| Alberta | Calgary Southwest | NDP | Holly | Heffernan | We, the NDP, will sign the food safety commitment but we are unable at this time to explicitly commit to 1,000 inspectors |
| Alberta | Calgary West | Liberal | Jennifer | Pollock | After election day, I hope our Prime Minister will give a sincere apology and condolences to the families that have lost loved ones. Unfortunately Mr Harper is not able to separate his responsibilty and accountability from his re-election plans. |
| Alberta | Crowfoot | Liberal | Sharon L. | Howe | There should never be a price on human lives, everything should be done to maintain food safety. |
| Alberta | Crowfoot | NDP | Ellen | Parker | |
| Alberta | Edmonton Centre | NDP | Donna | Martyn | |
| Alberta | Edmonton East | Green Party | Trey | Capnerhurst | |
| Alberta | Edmonton-Leduc | NDP | Hana | Razga | |
| Alberta | Edmonton-Spruce Grove | NDP | Barb | Phillips | |
| Alberta | Edmonton Spruce Grove | Green Party | Wendy | Walker | We at the Green Party are absolutely committed to food safety. Under the present government food safety inspectors have been cut in increasing numbers. A part of the green plan is hire more safety inspectors. |
| Alberta | Edmonton-Sherwood Park | Liberal | Rick | Szostak | |
| Alberta | Edmonton-St. Albert | NDP | Dave | Burkhart | |
| Alberta | Edmonton/St Albert | Green Party | Peter | Johnston | I agree with everything you say. The present Govt.
has allowed food safety standards to detiorate to the point where Canadians are dying! If elected, this is one of the issues that I will be addressing with extreme vigour. Thanks…. Peter Johnston |
| Alberta | Edmonton Strathcona | NDP | Linda | Duncan | Strong laws to protect health and environment are not enough. They must also be effectvely enforced. |
| Alberta | MacLeod | Liberal | Isabel | Paynter | First hand, I know this is a very serious, crucial issue, and I have made it my personal political platform. Be assured that I speak obout this issue at every Candidates forum, interview, and publically, every chance I get. I am totally committed to FOOD SAFETY! |
| Alberta | Macleod | Green Party | Jared | McCollum | |
| Alberta | Medicine Hat | Green Party | Kevin | Dodd | Harper is an enemy of the Canadians he represents. |
| Alberta | Mill Woods-Beaumont | Green Party | David-Allan | Hrushka | Listeriosis crisis was caused by deregulation – by shifting the onus on food inspection from the CFIA to industry. CMAJ editorial Sept. 16, 2008 – Gov’t transferred inspection duties for ready-to-eat meats from Govt inspectors to the meat industry. Self-inspection then became largely as a substitute for, not just as a supplement to, Gov’t inspection. Only once-monthly testing of finished products was required. And they allowed up to 100 Listeria bacteria/gm of ready-to-eat foods at the start of the product’s life. — while the WHO tolerates the same level, but at the end of the product’s life, and the U.S. tolerate none at all.
- The editor-in-chief of the Canadian Medical Association Journal and five others took the unusual step of blasting the Gov’t for this in an editorial in last week’s CMAJ. They wrote, Gov’t policy errors helped bring about this epidemic. Yet surprisingly, Govt has taken no remedial steps beyond issuing a food recall. Instead, officials praise the success of our infectious disease surveillance system — as if, with 16 dead, there were cause to celebrate — while food safety standards remain as low as ever. The Listeriosis epidemic is a timely reminder that the Harper Govt has reversed much of the progress that previous Govt made on governing for public health. - The same Nov. 2007 cabinet decision also handed self-inspection to the owner of meat plants and did the same for operators of animal feed mills and cut back the avian influenza preparedness program – yet & in an influenza pandemic tends of thousands of Canadians may die. They call for a full-scale public inquiry into the Listeria outbreak rather than the very limited, closed-door, non-arms-length investigation Harper has called for. - This is Walkerton all over again – the Gov’t stepping back from inspections, resulting in slackening of the standards, with dire consequences. And it’s the same cast of characters – Flaherty, Baird, Clement |
| Alberta | Westlock-St. Paul | NDP | Della | Drury | |
| Alberta | Wetaskiwin | NDP | Tim | Robson | Jack Layton would not have waited 14 days to call for a national inquiry into Maple Leaf Foods listeria outbreak. |
| Alberta | Wildrose | Green Party | Lisa Maria | Fox | |
| British Columbia | Abbotsford | Green Party | Karen | Durant | |
| British Columbia | Abbotsford | Liberal | Lionel | Travers | Deregulation of food inspection and removing the requirement for meat-processing companies to alert the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) about positive tests for listeria are at the very least partly responsible to the recent Listeriosis outbreak. I will work with the Liberal Party to restore our food inspection programs and improves them. |
| British Columbia | Burnaby Douglas | Liberal | Bill | Cunningham | |
| British Columbia | Burnaby Douglas | Green Party | Doug | Perry | Knowing that the food we buy is safe for us and our families is a basic right as consumers as far as I am concerned. Having food quality inspections done adequately and independent from the influence of the owners of the products and facilities that are being inspected in crucial. I also support requiring labeling to detail toxins in the foods and genetic modifications that were made to the plants, animals, and other life forms that are sold as food. The Green party platform sets out our parties goals in improving the quality of food produced in Canada that includes tax incentives to reduce the use of harmful agents on our food crops and products as well as specific new regulations to ensure that consumers can trust the products available in our stores and markets. |
| British Columbia | Burnaby-New Westminster | Green Party | Carrie | McLaren | A Government’s highest duty is to protect the public good. (To the credit of the Ontario government, their early-warning system flagged the listeriosis outbreak, which could have otherwise become much, much larger.)
The Green Party is absolutely committed to ensuring that food in Canada — wherever and whenever it is purchased — is safe to eat. At the farm level, we want to strengthen the Plant Protection and Health of Animals Programs, and help provinces ensure animal by-products are not used in animal feed. (This is a concern with mad cow syndrome.) For processed foods (including meats) we want to increase government monitoring. Where pesticides, growth hormones and other contaminants are detectable, we will encourage action by processors to bring these down to undetectable levels. From the business side, this will help the processors market their products in other products. |
| British Columbia | Cariboo–Prince George | Liberal | Drew | Adamick | |
| British Columbia | Delta-Richmond East | Liberal | Dana L. | Miller | |
| British Columbia | Delta-Richmond East | NDP | szilvia | barna | I am committed to food safety for the health and well being of all Canadians, including my family. |
| British Columbia | Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca | Liberal | Keith | Martin | |
| British Columbia | Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca | NDP | Jennifer | Burgis | Especially, restore a public audit system. |
| British Columbia | Esquimalt – Juan de Fuca | Green Party | Brian | Gordon | 100% testing of beef for BSE should be mandatory, too. |
| British Columbia | Kootnay-Columbia | NDP | Leon | Pendleton | |
| British Columbia | Langley | Liberal | Jake | Gray | I have one issue with these statements. I want to be able to buy meat directly from the farmer. i want to be able to see the conditions where the animal is raised and slaughtered. How will these changes allow small, local producers to survive? |
| British Columbia | Langley | Green Party | Patrick | Meyer | The need for these changes is obvious to any reasonable person. |
| British Columbia | Nanaimo-Alberni | Green Party | John | Fryer | |
| British Columbia | Nanaimo-Alberni | Liberal | Richard | Pesik | |
| British Columbia | Nanaimo-Cowichan | NDP | Jean | Crowder | |
| British Columbia | Nanaimo – Cowichan | Green Party | Christina | Knighton | |
| British Columbia | New Westminster-Coquitlam | Green Party | Marshall | Smith | Food safety and security is of paramount concern to the Green Party of Canada. Preserving agricultural land, protecting our water supplies, and helping out the family farm are key goals. Greens believe the 21st century will see a return to local food production and local markets. We would reform our system of farm income supplements to encourage more farms, not bigger farms. We oppose the current government approach of investing in genetically-modified crops for mass cultivation – their impacts on public health and safety are still unknown. Instead, we will work to strengthen organic agriculture – the fastest-growing industry in BC today. Our future depends on food safety, and I will fight for that right as your MP for New Westminster-Coquitlam. Please visit www.marshallsmith.ca & www.greenparty.ca for more details on the Green platform. |
| British Columbia | Okanagan Coquihalla | NDP | Ralph | Poynting | |
| British Columbia | Okanagan Shuswap | NDP | Alice | Brown | I support this |
| British Columbia | Pitt Meadows – Maple Ridge – Mission | Liberal | Dan | Olson | |
| British Columbia | pittmeadows-mapleridge-mission | Green Party | mike | gildersleeve | We need to ensure our food safety system has the resources and regulations it needs to be fail proof. |
| British Columbia | Port Moody — Westwood — Port Coquitlam | Liberal | Ron | McKinnon | I draw your attention to our platorm, which is specific on this matter:
The Liberal Party believes that it is important to learn the lessons of the Walkerton tragedy and put a real focus on ensuring that the food that we all eat is as safe as it can be. To ensure that lunch meats and other foods are safe for all of us, a Liberal government will invest an additional $50 million to build a more robust food safetynet. We want to get inspectors back on floors of the plant, focusing on keeping the food we eat safe rather than paperwork. Through the recruitment of more inspectors, ensuring inspectors have access to the best technology and expanding inspection efforts of both home grown and imported foods, Canadians will be able to have greater faith in the food we all eat. More inspection means more safety for all Canadians. |
| British Columbia | South Surrey – White Rock – Cloverdale | Green Party | David | Blair | |
| British Columbia | South Surrey/ White Rock Cloverdale | Liberal | Judy | Higginbotham | A Liberal gov’t will invest 50 million $ to build a more robust food safety net.
A Liberal Gov’t will hire 100 new inspectors ASAP. Food safety is critical and I will certainly fight to ensure it has priority with a Liberal gov’t. |
| British Columbia | Surrey North | NDP | Rachid | Arab | |
| British Columbia | Vancouver Centre | NDP | Michael | Byers | |
| British Columbia | Vancouver East | NDP | Libby | Davies | |
| British Columbia | Vancouver East | Green Party | mike | carr | |
| British Columbia | Vancouver Kingsway | NDP | Don | Davies | |
| British Columbia | Vancouver Kingsway | Liberal | Wendy | Yuan | I am very troubled by the the Conservative’s poor track record on food safety. Canadians deserve better.
It’s time for a change. It’s time to vote Liberal. |
| British Columbia | Vancouver Kingsway | Green Party | Doug | Warkentin | This is only part of teh solution. We also need better labelling laws (including GMO content), and more support for local production and smaller-scale processing facilities. |
| British Columbia | Vancouver Island North | Green Party | Philip | Stone | |
| British Columbia | Vancouver South | Green Party | Csaba | Gulyas | Thank you for bringing this important issue to the focus of our upcoming Federal Election. The most important ingredient of our life, is food. We need to provide 30 million Canadians with safe food, every day. Central regulation, national standards and strong enforcement, are imperative. |
| British Columbia | Vancouver South | NDP | Ann | Chambers | We need to have more health inspectors out doing their job and less time spent on paperwork, we also need to hire more inspectors |
| British Columbia | vancouver quadra | Green Party | dan | grice | Its about time! |
| British Columbia | South Surrey – White Rock – Cloverdale | Green Party | David | Blair | |
| British Columbia | Vancouver- Quadra | NDP | David | Caplan | |
| Manitoba | Brandon-Souris | NDP | John | Bouché | I agree we need to hire more inspectors and self inspection is an accident waiting to happen. |
| Manitoba | Brandon-Souris | Liberal | MJ | Willard | As a pathologist, trained in Laboratory testing, and a veterinarian who was authorized to perform testing of PMU mares, quality control and quality assurance are very important issues to me. These are essential and must include both internal and external proficiency testing measurements. CFIA inspectors must inspect all equipment, observe the testing techniques of those running the internal QC and QA as well as they must run their own independent checklists and tests on the samples. These persons must be certified and also must undergo external proficiency testing themselves. This means we need adequate numbers of adequately trained CFIA inspectors. |
| Manitoba | Charleswood-St James-Assiniboia | Green Party | Brian | Timlick | |
| Manitoba | Dauphin Swan River Marquete | NDP | Ron | Strynadka | We as a party feel that the cut back and deregulation in food inspection is unacceptable and must be reinstated and increased and enforced |
| Manitoba | Dauphin-Swn River-Marquette | Green Party | Kate | Storey | |
| Manitoba | Elmwood-Transcona | Green Party | Chris | Hrynkow | This is an issue very dear to my heart, which is related to my work with the Growing Up Organic program here in Manitoba….It is my wish that everyone have a good, integral and thruly nourishing relationship with their food. |
| Manitoba | Portage Lisgar | NDP | Mohamed | Alli | I am and will continue to commit to food safety. Should I be or when elected to serve the friends and families of Portage Lisgar and the rest of Canada I shall continue to do so.
We cannot and should not rely on in house inspection alone, We must hire more inspectors to inspect and protect our foods and any other products that we consume in our daily life. With your help and the friends and families of Portage Lisgar, when elected, I shall recomend that the public audit system be restored. This is my Commitment to you. |
| Manitoba | Provencher | NDP | Ross | Martin | |
| Manitoba | Saint Boniface | NDP | Matt | Schaubroeck | |
| Manitoba | Saint Boniface | Green Party | Marc | Payette | |
| Manitoba | Selkirk-Interlake | Green Party | Glenda | Whiteman | Food Safety is an issue we can no longer afford to take for granted. I am absolutely committed to restoring a safe food and water supply in Canada. Besides ending industry self-regulation and supporting organing farming to reduce chemical use, my commitment includes requiring adequate labelling of what is really in our food, such as genetically engineered ingredients. |
| Manitoba | Winnipeg Centre | Liberal | Dan | Hurley | |
| Manitoba | Winnipeg South Center | Liberal | Anita | Neville | |
| Manitoba | Winnipeg South Center | NDP | Rachel | Heinrichs | |
| Manitoba | Winnipeg South | NDP | Sean | Robert | I believe that it is an outrage that 13 people died from listeriosis from the Maple Leaf plant and the only response that we have from our Health minister, Tony Clement, is that this is proof that the system works. The fact that he spoke these words from Denver, when a better response would have been to return to Canada as soon as possible as state that he would get to the bottom of this, smacks of the uncaring nature of this government.
I guess, for Mr Clement, that 13 people dying is proof that the system works much better that 23 people dying and hundreds more becoming ill from the tainted water tragedy in Walkerton, Ont, when he was provincial health minister. Will we ever learn? |
| New Brunswick | Beausejour | Green Party | Mike | Milligan | I feel if we can begin to support locally produced food products,by designating one aisle in the grocery stores
for local products.People will support it.Hense the transportation, and worry of foods coming from other countries will be reduced. |
| New Brunswick | Beausejour | NDP | Chris | Durrant | I concur entirely with the NDP response to this question, so I suppose this would constitute a mildly qualified taking of the commitment. |
| New Brunswick | Beausejour | NDP | Chris | Durrant | The NDP position is as follows: Hire 1000 additional inspectors and veterinarians to improve compliance. A New Democrat government would substantially increase the number of food safety inspectors and veterinarians, however assigning an arbitrary number prior to a proper review of the size of the problem would not be good governance as this figure may not actually reflect the number of personnel needed to ensure food safety. Our government will also ensure food inspectors and veterinarians are actually spending time on the floor and not filling out paperwork. Place an immediate moratorium on industry self-policing policies New Democrats are disturbed that the Conservatives are willing to jeopardize the health and safety of Canadians, by privatizing food inspection just to save a few dollars is not acceptable. New Democrats strongly believe that a central role of government is to ensure the health and safety of Canadians. We are strongly opposed to the changes to Canada’s Food Inspection Agency wrought by Liberal and Conservative governments. New Democrats would ensure Canada’s food inspection system has the necessary resources to ensure the food Canadians eat is safe. Later in this election, New Democrats will be releasing a comprehensive plan for food safety and agriculture. Remove obstacles preventing CFIA inspectors & vets from taking immediate action. Preventing any kind of safety inspector from taking immediate action makes a mockery of the entire idea of independent inspection. New Democrats would ensure that CFIA inspectors and veterinarians have the necessary authority and resources to keep the food Canadians eat safe. Restore the system of public audit reports which were cancelled under pressure from the meat industry. A New Democrat government would reverse the harmful, cavalier and foolhardy actions of the Harper Conservatives and restore full public accountability of Canada’s food industry. |
| New Brunswick | Acadie-Bathurst | Green Party | Michelle | Aubin | Green Party urges government review and changes for Canadian Food System Consistent with its privatization agenda, the Harper government has announced that as of October 2008, it will no longer inspect federally inspected slaughterhouses (sic) but will require these companies report on themselves. The Green Party opposes this move and urges the government to review the Canadian food system and safety regulations in their entirety and to put food safety back into the hands of Health Canada, said Ms. Allen. The CFIA should be given the responsibility for local food economies rather than Agri-food/global food economies. Read. The Green Party will press for a full judicial investigation into Canadas troubled meat inspection system and reverse the Conservative government’s effort to undermine this countrys food safety program. | New Brunswick | Fredericton | Green Party | Mary Lou | Babineau | |
| New Brunswick | Fredericton | NDP | Jesse | Travis | I want to make sure that we protect all Canadians by ensuring that companies aren’t given the opportunity to take risks that can sadly result in great injury to consumers. |
| New Brunswick | Fundy Royal | NDP | Rob | Moir | Safe water and safe food – these are prerequisites for a functioning society. I hope, for the sake of the country, you are successful in your campaign. |
| New Brunswick | Madawaska-Restigouche | Liberal | Jean-Claude | D’Amours | |
| New Brunswick | Miramichi | NDP | Donald | Doucet | |
| New Brunswick | Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe | NDP | Carl | Bainbridge | |
| New Brunswick | New Brunswick Southwest | Liberal | Nancy | MacIntosh | I believe that insisting accurate and complete labelling of food is one of the major issues we need to face immediately as a government. Even Made in Canada is not enough information, but should indicate which province in which is was grown, produced and packaged. It must say if it is GM and there must be strict rules around ‘organic’. |
| New Brunswick | New Brunswick Southwest | NDP | Andrew | Graham | It is very unfortunate that 20 lives, and maybe more, had to be lost to listeriosis to have the public take notice of the reckless and careless attitude that the Conservative government adopted by allowing self-inspection, and the thinning out of our food inspectors.
We cannot trust this government with food, nor much else. Will people heed the lesson? |

| Nova Scotia | CUMBERLAND COLCHESTER MUSQUODOBOIT VALLEY | NDP | KAREN | OLSSON | As a former health care professional I’m deeply concerned about the safety of our food and water.
Regulation is meaningless without adequate, independent inspection. I take the commitment, with the proviso that I would support hiring whatever number of veterinarians and inspectors is required to ensure the safety of Canada’s food supply. As a small organic hobby farmer I also concur with the comments of NDP candidate John Rafferty of Thunder Bay Rainy Rivier |
| Nova Scotia | Dartmouth Cole-Harbour | NDP | Brad | Pye | |
| Nova Scotia | Dartmouth-Cole Harbour | Green Party | Paul | Shreenan | Greater oversight is needed in highly industrialized and globalized food production systems. |
| Nova Scotia | Halifax West | Green Party | Michael | Munday | |
| Nova Scotia | Halifax | NDP | Megan | Leslie | A New Democrat government would substantially increase the number of food safety inspectors and veterinarians, however assigning an arbitrary number prior to a proper review of the size of the problem would not be good governance as this figure may not actually reflect the number of personnel needed to ensure food safety. Our government will also ensure food inspectors and veterinarians are actually spending time on the floor and not filling out paperwork.New Democrats are disturbed that the Conservatives are willing to jeopardize the health and safety of Canadians, by privatizing food inspection just to save a few dollars. | Nova Scotia | Sackville Eastern Shore | NDP | Peter | Stoffer | |
| Nova Scotia | Sackville Eastern Shore | Liberal | Carolyn | Scott | I am very concerned about the CPC government’s deregulation of the food safety industry. I feel that what has happened with the tainted meat is a tragedy and my deepest condolences go out to all of those who have been affected. Under a new Liberal government more money will be invested and more inspectors will be hired. We will do what it takes so that Canadians feel confident that the food they are buying and consumming in Canada is 100% safe. Canadians must be assured that their federal government takes this issue seriously. Yes, I commit to Food Safety. |
| Nova Scotia | Sackville – Eastern Shore | Green Party | Noreen | Hartlen | I sincerely appreciate and empathize with your comments and concerns. Nutrition and food safety/security are extremely important issues to me.
I would definitely work towards ensuring food safety within the scope of GPC policies and platform, which is an outstanding document and commitment to food security. Moreover, it is a fundamental principle in the Green Party’s platform to ensure quality nutrition. The GPC is also committed to the protection, development, support, and enhancement of resources that provide us food. The above position is absolutely vital to me as someone with education and knowledge about nutrition and the poor state of our health and health care services. Good nutrition can make a world of difference to many of our social ills. * I hope this helps; and thank you so very much for your interest and sense of responsibility in contacting us. * I will post my above response to food safety on the link you provided. Taking the Food Safety Commitment, by allowing the arrow to stand in the applicable box below, would require me to work within a finance committee orientation and opportunity to examine the full extent of what is necessary, so I would prefer not to commit so specifically at this time. Please be assured, however, that the GPC is very flexible and creative in its approach to meeting the needs of Canadians. |
| Nova Scotia | South Shore-St. Margaret’s | Green Party | Michael | Oddy | |
| Nova Scotia | sydney – victoria | Green Party | collin | harker | While I agree with the principles outlined below, and some of the measures identified to deal with the problems, I feel that there should also be a strong commitment by Government to supporting more local food production, organic agricultural methods, and more humane treatment of the animals kept and killed for food. |
| Nova Scotia | Sydney-Victoria | NDP | Wayne | McKay | We certainly need to make sure our food is safe. We also need to ensure that food is healthy. We should put larger focus on helping local, organic farmers as well because their product is healthier and safer to begin with. |
| Nova Scotia | West Nova | Liberal | Robert | Thibault | |
| Nova Scotia | West Nova | NDP | George | Barron | |
| Nunavut | Nunavut | NDP | Paul | Irngaut | |
| Ontario | Ajax/Pickering | NDP | Bala | Thavarajasoorier | If I’m elected, I will definitely fix the food safety problem, if it comes under my jurisdiction. |
| Ontario | Ajax Pickering | Green Party | Mike | Harilaid | I fully support needed food safety measures as well as adequte protection for the farmers and suppliers who are working to bring healthy and needed food to consumers, |
| Ontario | Barrie | Green Party | Erich | Jacoby-Hawkins | The Green Party believes in adopting SUCCESSFUL policies from other jurisdictions, regardless if they are right, left, or otherwise. The Harper government constantly copies FAILED policies (from Harris, Klein, Bush) based on ideological blinders. The listeriosis deaths are yet another example – Walkerton all over again. If you believe in public safety and security, vote Green, not Conservative. |
| Ontario | Brampton West | Green Party | Patti | Chmelyk | |
| Ontario | Brant | Green Party | Nora | Fueten | |
| Ontario | Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound | NDP | Jill | McIllwraith | Every canadian has the right to expect that the food they buy to eat and the water they drink should not be harmful in any way.
This is why we pay taxes!!!! |

| Ontario | Davenport | Green Party | Frank | de Jong | |
| Ontario | Davenport | NDP | Peter | Ferreira | |
| Ontario | Don Valley | Liberal | John | Envadero | It seems to me that the biggest problem exposed with the listeriosis scare is the incredible inability of meat companies like Maple Leaf Food to trace their products. Although Maple Leaf thinks it was caused by a particular slicer machine, they still do not know for sure.
What we should be demanding of politicians is that food companies be required to implement solutions to track and trace such as the one Matiq, Norway’s largest meat supplier, is implementing from butcher shop to the store. read article |
| Ontario | Don Valley West | Liberal | Rob | Oliphant | We must ensure the highest standards for food safety, that meat is inspected and that our water is clean to drink. These are things that should not be privatized, and government must not be reduced at the risk of people’s health and safety. |
| Ontario | Dufferin-Caledon | NDP | Jason | Bissett | |

| Ontario | Elgin-Middlesex-London | NDP | Ryan | Dolby | |
| Ontario | Elgin-Middlesex-London | Green Party | Noel | Burgon | |
| Ontario | Elgin MIddlesex London | Liberal | Suzanne | van Bommel | I have been at the forefront of acting to protect our food supply. As former Chief of Staff for then Ontario Minister of Agriculture and Food Minister Steve Peters, I was instrumental in hiring more provincial meat inspectors and launching the Justice Haines Review into food safety in the province of Ontario. Industry cannot be allowed to self inspect. |
| Ontario | Essex | NDP | Taras | Natyshak | |
| Ontario | essex | Green Party | richard | bachynsky | |
| Ontario | Glengarry-Prescott-Russell | Green Party | Sylvie | Lemieux | I would work at a target of Dec 08 to put timelines to the planning and implementation of the four aspects of this commitment. |
| Ontario | Halton | Green Party | Amy | Collard | Food safety is a very serious issue that needs to be addressed immediately. There have been a number of food and toy product recalls over the past year, due to safety concerns. These recalls speak loudly to the need for tighter regulatory controls as well as increased vigilance on the part of manufacturers and distributors.
Now that we have increased public scrutiny and awareness of these safety issues, I believe that there will be an overhaul in the inspection system to improve processes. However, this is just the first step that needs to be taken in order to ensure the safety of consumers. We also need to determine exactly what caused the problems in the first place, and what should have been done in order to prevent them from happening. I would support regulatory changes to the inspection and safety system as well. |
| Ontario | Haldimand Norfolk | NDP | Ian | Nichols | |
| Ontario | Haliburton Kawartha Lakes Brock | Green Party | Michael | Bell | |
| Ontario | Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock | Liberal | Marlene | White | The safety of the citizens of Canada is the responsibility of government. I take that responsibility very seriously.
The Liberals would invest $50million to ensure that there are enough food safety inspectors and that the industry is not self-regulating. |
| Ontario | Hamilton Centre | Green Party | John | Livingstone | |
| Ontario | Hamilton Centre | Green Party | John | Livingstone | The safety and health of Canadians is very important to the Green Party. Nickel and dime cuts by the present government expose a meanness of spirit and cavalier attitude towards food safety by the present government. |
| Ontario | Hamilton East – Stoney Creek | Green Party | David | Hart Dyke | I agree with virtually everything I see here, but will not commit to a specific number of food inspectors or similar arbitrary standards. If more inspectors are needed to ensure safety, sobeit. If fewer can do the job, then I reject the idea of seeking a synthetic feel-good target.
Basically, I support your goals, but flatly refuse to have some jerk wave this survey under my nose a few years down the road and try to insist that I’ve failed to live up to my commitment. I am an honourable person (and I don’t mean that in the elected sense), and will not have my honour questioned because perhaps I chose to support 900 inspectors, or even some technological answer such as visual scanning. Safe food is my concern. The specific details of attaining it, less so. |
| Ontario | Hamilton East – Stoney Creek | Conservative | Frank | Rukavina | We must not forget that under the Chretien/Martin Liberals over a billion dollars was cut from the Agriculture budget and millions from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
The Liberal Budget of 1995 also undertook opportunities for privatization and states: The Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food will share responsibilities and streamline arrangements with industry for inspection and regulation activities. (Budget 1995) In contrast, the Conservative government has invested in food safety, hired 200 new inspectors, strengthened regulation, and initiated an independent investigation to improve our system. The Liberal record on health safety is summed up best by former Finance Minister Paul Martin when he said in his 1996 budget speech: Surely we can all agree that it is simply silly for a food processing plant to have a federal meat inspector, a federal health inspector, a federal fish inspector, not to mention a provincial health inspector and a provincial food inspector tripping over themselves on the same day, in the same plant, doing essentially the same thing. This Conservative government has a strong record of investing to correct deficiencies created by 13 years of Liberal cuts. |
| Ontario | Hamilton East – Stoney Creek | NDP | Wayne | Marston | 1. Hire 1000 additional inspectors and veterinarians to improve compliance.
2. 3. Restore the system of public audit reports which were cancelled under pressure from the meat industry. A New Democrat government would reverse the harmful, cavalier and foolhardy actions of the Harper Conservatives and restore full public accountability of Canada’s food industry. |

| Ontario | OSHAWA | NDP | MIKE | SHIELDS | Canadians have a right to expect the food they eat is safe. Last month’s deadly listeriosis outbreak has shaken consumer confidence and highlighted the importance of vigilant inspection, enforcement and the public’s right to know. In this election campaign, Canada’s New Democrats introduced a plan for better regulation of food safety and security for Canadians. In contrast, the Harper government has proposed cutting funds for the food inspection system that helps to protect food products. New Democrats are not in favor of self regulation and a larger role of the industry in surveillance processes. Surveillance processes should not be left to the whims of budget cutting or profit taking. Canadian consumers deserve to know the their products are safe and that the proper, impartial oversight is being performed during production |
| Ontario | Ottawa Centre | Liberal | Penny | Collenette | |
| Ontario | Ottawa Centre | Green Party | Jen | Hunter | I agree with these points. The Conservative approach to allow the industry regulate itself is the same philosophy that has us in the economic mess we’re presently in. I am against privatization of our food inspection agency. It needs to remain an independent body to ensure safety is above all else. |

In addition I believe we must invest in local and regional food markets and value-added processing, invest in research and market development for organic production, ban terminator seed technologies and ensure farmers have the right to save and reuse seed. We must also encourage urban centres to develop good food distribution systems that build closer links between producers and consumers. |
| Ontario | Thunder Bay-Superior North | Liberal | Don | McArthur | As a father and a husband, I take food safety very seriously. I proud to say that a Liberal government will invest an additional $50 million to a build a more robust food safety net. It is essential that a food safety crisis like the listeriosis outbreak never happens again, and thats why we will put a real focus on inspection by recruiting more inspectors, ensuring inspectors have access to the best technology and expanding inspection efforts of both home-grown and imported foods. Local citizens will be able to have greater faith in the good we eat. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency employed about 1200 inspectors in 2007. The new Liberal investment will result in an eight percent increase in the number of inspectors. This investment will represent an almost five percent increase to the federal investment in food inspection. |
| Ontario | Thunder Bay Superior North | Green Party | Brendan | Hughes | The security of our food is imperative from a safety and from a rights perspective. The traditional political parties have allowed private corporations to own the rights of certain genetically modified organisms and seeds, and this is immoral and has to stop. As a former teacher of food and nutrition science, I understand these issues very well. Even in our northern climate we have the ability to localize our food sources, and we can work on technological advancements as well as go back to family farms and local initiatives like the good food box program. We will be holding a Green Party Platform launch on Saturday Oct. 11 at the Farmers’ Market (CLE grounds) at 9 am in Thunder Bay Ontario. We welcome everyone and hope that you will support the party that takes safety, and food safety, seriously. |

We not only need more meat inspectors but we need to have all inspection done by the public sector not by industry associations. We also need to inspect the hundreds of further processing plants in Ontario that are currently not inspected at all. We also need to reinstitute fruit and vegetable inspection. Self regulation is no regulation. |
